Broad-Based Community Coalition Launches Citywide
Signature Gathering Effort To Qualify
Renters Upgrade Act For November 2016 Ballot

Vice Mayor Rebecca Kaplan, Community and Tenant advocacy organizations and members of prominent East Bay Labor Unions will be hitting the streets this weekend to urge Oaklanders to qualify a strong Oakland renters’ protection ordinance for the November 2016 ballot.

Amidst concerns about skyrocketing rents and home prices, the Committee to Protect Oakland Renters—which includes the California Nurses Association, Service International Employees Union (SEIU) 1021, Oakland Community Organizations (OCO), Causa Justa, Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment (AACE), and the Oakland Tenants Union among others – are calling skyrocketing Oakland rents that are now the 8th most expensive in the country an emergency which must be addressed through voter action.

The Committee is seeking to strengthen protections for renters from illegal rent increases and evictions, including expanding the representation of tenant representatives on the Oakland Rent Stabilization Board and limiting rent increases to a maximum of 5% per year, among other protections.
